A Carbon Neutral Sporting Event

The Tathra Wharf to Waves committee is again supporting the Bega Valley community’s targets of 50/50 by 2020 and was proud that the 2007 Tathra Wharf to Waves was the first carbon neutral sporting event in Australia. This target is a 50% reduction in the consumption of energy by the year 2020 and a 50% production of energy from renewable sources by the same year. The committee aim to make this a carbon neutral event by working out the carbon emissions for the weekend (i.e. road transport, boats, electricity used). The cost of offsetting this carbon load will be calculated by working out the value of tree planting that would be required to neutralize the carbon emissions for the event. We will work out the cost of offsetting this carbon load and this figure will be donated to one of the several renewable energy projects that are currently underway in the Bega Valley. Hopefully, Kangarutha Nursery will pledge their support and donate 400 tube plants to be given away over the weekend.
